Human rights lawyer Adamu Kabiru Adamu has sharply criticized the Federal Government and the nation’s security leaders, asserting that the ongoing insurgency and banditry in Nigeria signify a failure of the state.

In a forceful statement released on Monday, Adamu contended that no organized criminal activity should persist for more than 24 hours in a country with an effective government. He emphasized that the ongoing violence in Northern Nigeria reflects either incompetence, a lack of political will, or complicity at the highest levels of authority.

“It is a well-established principle that any insurgency or organized criminal activity that lasts beyond 24 hours does so because elements within the system allow it,” he stated.

Adamu expressed dismay that, despite over a decade of counter-insurgency efforts, substantial security budgets, and repeated assurances from successive administrations, Nigerians continue to face daily threats of kidnappings, killings, and displacement.

He raised concerns about why insecurity remains most acute in Northern Nigeria, particularly when the leaders of all major security agencies are from the region. “If those at the very top, who share roots with the affected communities, cannot secure the North, what hope is there for ordinary Nigerians across the country?” he questioned.

The lawyer characterized every unsafe highway and unprotected village as “evidence of broken promises,” underscoring that security is a constitutional right, not a privilege.

Adamu called for immediate and transparent investigations into allegations of sponsorship and protection of insurgents, demanding public accountability from political leaders and security chiefs. He also urged for urgent measures to resettle displaced communities and dismantle what he referred to as “the networks of collaboration between criminals and their enablers.”

He warned that insecurity persisting beyond 24 hours constitutes a betrayal by the state. The statement, which was shared with the Presidency, the National Security Adviser, all service chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, and Northern governors, concluded with a demand for “visible results, not speeches.”
