The Niger State Police Command has arrested nine individuals in Minna over an alleged self-orchestrated kidnapping plot, following a swift investigation that also led to the recovery of 21 SIM cards and 29 SIM registration certificates.

The arrests were confirmed in a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun.

How the Investigation Began

According to the police, the case started on September 2, 2025, when the Tudun-Wada Division received a report of a suspected kidnapping in the Mandela area of Minna. Shortly after, a ransom demand of ₦7 million was made through an unfamiliar phone number.

The following day, September 3, police arrested Suleiman Dauda, the first suspect. During interrogation, he led investigators to eight additional accomplices in the Mandela area.

“During a search, we recovered 21 SIM cards and 29 SIM certificates from Suleiman Dauda,” SP Abiodun revealed.

Role of Vigilantes in the Arrests

The success of the operation was made easier with the support of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), who worked closely with the police to track down the suspects. Their local intelligence and presence in the community greatly improved the effectiveness of the security response.

Authorities noted that the collaboration with the VGN reflects a growing synergy between law enforcement agencies and community-based security networks in tackling emerging crime trends.

Fraudulent Scheme Uncovered

Investigations revealed that Suleiman, who claimed to be involved in SIM card registration, had provided the handset and number used for the ransom demand to the supposed victim. Further findings indicated that one of the suspects conspired with the alleged victim to extort ransom money from their associates.

The group was also found to be engaged in Ponzi-style fraudulent activities, raising concerns about broader criminal networks exploiting telecommunications resources for financial crimes.

Ongoing Prosecution

The suspects have been arraigned in court as investigations continue to identify and apprehend other individuals connected to the scheme.

SP Abiodun emphasized that the case highlights a disturbing trend of self-kidnapping being used as a tool for financial fraud. He assured residents that the police, working hand-in-hand with local vigilante groups, remain committed to strengthening security across the state.
