In a pressing development, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Vigilante Group Of Nigeria (VGN) have been urged to investigate the alleged diversion of public resources to bandits and criminals in Zamfara State. This call was made during a press conference held by the Situation Room on Monitoring the War Against Banditry in Abuja over the weekend.
Mr. Henry Abba, the convener of the Situation Room, expressed deep dissatisfaction with the handling of bandit kingpins’ hideouts by Governor Dauda Lawal. He emphasized the urgent need for a National Assembly-led inquiry to scrutinize how security intelligence is managed within the state. Abba’s remarks highlighted the dire situation in Zamfara, where he described the state as having transformed into a “notorious graveyard,” plagued by abductions, massacres, and mass displacements.
During the press conference, Abba painted a grim picture of the ongoing crisis in Zamfara, detailing how villages have been reduced to rubble, families have been torn apart by nightly raids, and farmlands lie abandoned under the pervasive shadow of fear. He criticized the state government for its reluctance to share critical intelligence with federal security agencies, which he believes has exacerbated the plight of innocent residents.
Abba dismissed attempts by supporters of Governor Lawal to frame the situation as a desperate appeal for federal aid, stating, “This isn’t a plea; it’s a confession. He knows the exact dens of these murderers, yet opts for inaction while his citizens perish.” He challenged the governor to provide evidence of any prior intelligence-sharing with military or police agencies, questioning why such crucial information has seemingly vanished into bureaucratic voids.
The Situation Room’s call to action underscores the urgent need for accountability and effective measures to combat the escalating violence and insecurity in Zamfara State.
